When warehouse rent is high and floor space is fixed, the way you store pallets decides how much stock you can hold. Standard selective racking is easy to work with, but it spends a lot of floor area on aisles. High-density pallet racking cuts those aisles down — storing far more pallets in the same building — by trading a little accessibility for a lot of capacity. What “high-density” pallet racking means

Every racking layout sits somewhere on a trade-off between selectivity (how easily you can reach any individual pallet) and density (how many pallets you fit per square metre). Selective racking gives you 100% access to every pallet but needs an aisle for roughly every two rows. High-density systems remove or share aisles so pallets are stored several deep, which raises capacity sharply but means you no longer reach every pallet directly.

The other factor is stock rotation. Some high-density systems work LIFO (last in, first out) and some FIFO (first in, first out) — and that difference decides which one suits your goods.

The main high-density systems

Double-deep racking

Double-deep stores pallets two positions deep instead of one, roughly halving the number of aisles. It needs a reach truck with a pantograph (extending) fork to place and retrieve the rear pallet. It is LIFO, so it suits products where you hold two or more pallets of the same SKU. It is the simplest, lowest-cost step up in density from selective racking — a good first move for growing warehouses. Drive-in and drive-through racking

Drive-in racking removes aisles almost entirely: the forklift drives inside the rack structure along rails to deposit pallets on continuous support arms. Drive-in is loaded and unloaded from the same side (LIFO); drive-through is open both ends (FIFO). This is the highest-density block-storage option and is ideal for large volumes of the same product — cold stores, beverages, bulk raw materials. Push-back racking

Push-back stores pallets two to five deep on slightly inclined rails with nested carts. Loading a new pallet pushes the ones behind it back; removing a front pallet lets the others roll forward by gravity. It is LIFO but faster and more selective than drive-in, because the operator works entirely from the aisle rather than driving into the rack. It is a strong middle ground between density and speed.

Pallet shuttle (radio shuttle) racking

A semi-automated option: a battery-powered shuttle runs inside deep storage channels, moving pallets to and from the aisle face while the forklift stays outside. It is the densest non-automated system, works FIFO or LIFO, and dramatically speeds up deep-lane storage — best for high-throughput operations with many pallets per SKU.

How these compare to selective pallet racking

If your warehouse holds many different SKUs with only a few pallets each, selective pallet racking is usually still the right answer — the access it gives outweighs the floor it costs. High-density systems earn their place when you hold fewer SKUs in larger quantities, because that is when giving up per-pallet access buys you real capacity. Many warehouses run a mix: selective for fast-moving, varied stock and a high-density block for bulk lines.
